Background:

BPL is a not-for-profit social enterprise and charitable company that was established in July 1999. They operate a diverse portfolio of sports and leisure facilities across Barnsley, Bassetlaw, Mansfield and Pontefract. BPL were looking for solutions to reduce energy bills and carbon outputs which they could roll out across their sites.

Our Approach:

BPL approached ELe® to carry out an initial survey of their Mansfield gym and propose appropriate energy efficiency projects based on BPL’s budget and return on investment needs. The site has very high energy usage despite already upgrading to energy efficient lighting so Solar was highlighted as the ideal solution.

The project went out to tender and ELe® was successfully selected as the ultimate delivery partner based on a number of factors including; health and safety, design and engineering capability, delivery capability and their experience in the design and installation of large scale solar projects.

The Solution:

Extreme Low Energy Ltd (ELe®) is an expert in energy efficiency and renewable technology and proposed to install a solar PV system which delivered exactly what BPL were looking for:- a solution to reduce their energy usage and carbon emissions. The ELe® team managed the whole project from conception to completion including applying to the DNO for permission to connect the solar PV system to the grid. The project delivered a 122kWp solar PV system, installing over 400 solar panels to the gym roof at BPL Fitness Flex Mansfield.

The whole system was installed in 2 weeks during the gym’s lockdown period and was completed ready for the gym’s reopening at the end of July. Installation of the new solar PV system was carried out by ELe® with no disruption to the business or the gym members, the end result a new solar powered gym.

Key benefits include the new solar PV system massively contributing to BPL’s long-term carbon reduction strategy including saving 24 tonnes of CO2 per annum. The system has been designed to match on-site energy usage to maximise the returns for BPL with 98% self-use estimated. Members now returning to use the facility will know there is a new solar roof on the gym by the digital display in the reception area showing everyone how much clean electricity has been generated and carbon saved.
